OK, what happened in the past weeks. At SES San Jose there has been announced that people will have to stop accepting paid links to their websites OR at least beware how and which ones are OK for them. What stays behind this.

As Matt Cutts says the paid link “…should be labeled in one of the following ways:

Use a redirect through URL blocked by robots.txt

Redirect through a URL using a 302

Use Javascript to direct the link

Apply the rel=”nofollow” attribute to the link

Add the Meta Robots = “nofollow” to the page header…”

This sounds fair enough and not because you, as publisher, should (probably) indicate what is the type of the link, is it a sponsored, paid or just a recommendation. From this point of view, yes, all we should be OK because the visitors and readers will also know what they are click on. On other hand, the crawlers and robots will easily recognize the links and the search engines will have better view on how to rank the different websites.

Matt Cutts says also that Google have this policy from 2005 when they started to change their ranking model and algorithm. He adds that that does not mean you do not have to buy or sell links but to check on where the links are coming from. What about the companies that sell link, most of them are excluded and probably if you buy from Text-link-ads you may have troubles, that is why they recently started using the tiny url services to pass and respect the new google strategy.

So far so good, what’s next. The people will hear one way or another that the links are “bad” and will stop selling them, what about the profits of the site owners? They will certainly suffer and will have to find other ways to make money.

Another thing, adwords exists for a long time now, there are no that many internet users that are not aware of what is happening when they click on text or banners having “ads by google” somewhere around them. So, the clicks coming from adwords decreased. Google then have to do something about it, what probable they came up with is to crush the competitors and the business (and the spammers too of course). They change the way the search engine works and stop bothering about the paid links.

From other hand they still show the paid listings through adwords and show them in their search results and what is most important, those results include links to sites that sell links! What is that if not hypocrisy and double standart -”we do not recommend to use such a service, but we still accept their money for our ad program”.

Well, what the business will do if do not want to use some crappy SEO services or believe in the good will of the Web Revolution? Of course most of the companies will start again using the paid listings of the big search engines and the latter will continue to make big money.

That is how I understand this whole thing in depth. If you want you can read what happened on the SEOmoz blog here.

One more thing, most of the people do not have the knowledge to understand the meaning of adwords and it is true that most of the advertisers are not reading, what is written as explanation so most of the ad campaigns are not that effective which makes them profitable to google, because they place your listings all over and its up to you as advertiser to exclude or include some website.

Moreover, the “recommendation” of not using any paid-link services directs the companies directly to google, which is killing the competition of the different businesses because in fact they cannot choose the exact locations of their ads, they cannot attract customers only because one or another website chosen to show specific ad!

So, finally , this may only lead to rivalry, but a strange one - lets see who will pay more to google or yahoo, so they can place my ads on better places!

The good news here are only 2 - this strategy will reduce the number of spam and scam links and lots of fake websites will simple disappear from the search engines and least but not last - the web publishers will start making more money when using these programs !

Enjoy the reality!

Probably you may not find anything new under this title but I will try to direct your attention not in a way to understand why the hosts are choosing the places to advertise with but how they do that. Moreover, how these blogs/websites are “feeding” themselves and what’s the point with all this.

Why nurseries? Because of SEO, keyword and page rank purposes, because of better branding, almost “free” linking etc.

What problem I find here - Google cannot say which of the links and keywords are real and which ones are made after a business interference. It is simple, you can just made a number of websites or blogs and use the key phrases as keywords with direct links to your company. Well, you need at least maintain those sites to make sure the links are qualitative. More or less this makes them valuable but still the blogs/sites are made with one exact goal.

One more thing, you can just choose something you want to chase as key for your business and start making it work for you. What’s unfair here is the way the companies are doing it. Of course there are lots of hosts that go and strictly are seeking for niche sites and offering them to host them for free or are advertising for less when the sites are still “young”. Other method is to provide some service - free templates for example where you put your logo or link and oblige the customer to include it in the code.

For the bloggers - start to value your blog from all its sides - the earnings may progress as well as the ones who wish to pay for link from your site

Well, this post is not an easy task but I will do a short review of what I have as experience. Lets start with two examples.

The first case is about the web host. You run a decent web hosting company, but something went wrong. The web hosting deals you offer are good enough and competitive, the market you target is not that far and you have customers. Your profit is not changing, and neither your growth. What is wrong? Never thought of it? Well, just try to focus on something different. Change something - your prices, no, you cannot do that, you are not overseller! Level up your features - you cannot afford this, the data center your machines are at is not that suitable. New marketing methods - the problem is that this part of the game is far too saturated and you do not have enough resources, as a gamer would say when playing HOMM5 (Heroes of Might and Magic 5).

I can give you an idea, its not a fresh one or something that will definitely but it works. Try a redesign and do it right now. Do not change your company’s mission, do not change your style of work, do not change the concept of the business you run, just give your customers and visitors a new look. Where is the point. At least the people will know you are still there and working for them. No, there is something even better, you can include, exclude or change something little you did not liked. You can make a room for placing additional services or remove some you do not want or that are not profitable. Want some more - your clients and visitors will have to look around the website to find the staff they liked, they will go and see if you have changed the prices or the agreement conditions.

No, you just changed the look, OK, then start talking about it, write an article, send your PR news. Just show the people that you care for them and your business future. Try to explain why you did that and ask for a feedback. Ask them what they thing of it, where you were right or not, what can be still improved. You can even give a promotion for your existing customers and the new ones - it would be a present for them, make them happy and you will be!

The case with the customers - one day they will find something different and it won’t be the raised prices! What is your first though when you are visiting a website with new look? What have been changed, is there something new I can take advantage of? Why he/she did it, or the company wants to confuse its clients? No, it is just something that shows the dedications of the web hosting company or any other business that wants to show it cares for its customers data base and want to improve it, not just to increase it.

There is something else actually, the web hosting company I am working for is doing some major changes but probably I will talk about it later. The web host is doing something that is valuable - it is not just changing its look, it is making a transitional period. You just need to show your customers that you are in a middle of something, giving them a clue and them when they are aware of it or just think you will stop there - make the final step. Give your business a boost, act irrational!
