I was always wondering why internet is full if illegal content and its there for years, no one really cares for it and makes nothing to stop those pirates. Well, it can be understood from couple of directions.

The illegal websites are hard to track and shut, which is not that correct as it seems to be. The modern web gives lots of options, change the host, get an offshore one, pass through several proxies and many other techniques. But, if the authorities want to stop a website offering illegal or copyrighted materials, they can do that, there are a lot of laws regarding this. Anyone will say - its a matter of time and they will get busted - but no, these people are just moving from host to host and nothing can stop them.

What is the meaning of all this? Is there something else which may prevent the “war against the internet pirates”? I think that there might be, lets talk about the Hollywood studios, or any other big music producer companies - there are the most affected parties of all this and should be able to take steps to stop or limit the illegal content on the web.

The latest story about the lawsuit against Google and YouTube is showing that this is just another way of making your product more and more popular. What better to have the medias use your company’s name than being there, in the newspaper, the late show, the news, on Internet.

We all know that if you really like a movie, you will go and watch in the cinema, if you love your favorite band, you will go and buy their new album or single. And its easy to understand that. The biggest problem here could be the software - yes, a lot of people prefer to have it downloaded from any torrent tracker or some hidden FTP site and they are may be doing the right thing , but the world biggest software developers holding monopolies over several unique products have their methods to stop you. Microsoft will have you prove the authenticity of your XP Professional before starting download the next critical update for IE7, other companies require other information to have your new program started. So, they can do that, some of them can stop the piracy, right?

Non of them will do it, this is just another marketing strategy, “let them speak about us, about our products, this will make them remember our name, our brand, they will have to use it, and they will come to us”. Smart and easy - well takes a lot of loses, money and time, but in the end it works!
